Finally my personally recommended method of newel post installation unless you mount the post into the floor.

The typical detail for fixing a landing newel post is to notch the newel post over the edge of your floor joist inline with the top newel on the staircase and double bolt the newel post to the joist. The newel post installation is usually left until the finishing stages. Bolting a newel post down to the top of the floor is easy. The posts serve as support for the entire rail system and must be securely attached to the floor.

Screws through the floorboards and into the joist underneath or set into concrete for a really secure fix. You just need 4 six inch long rail bolts. Once you are happy the riser fits run a small bead of glue we recommend pu woodweld or similar within the newel housing and along the back of the tread where the riser will be screwed.
